Setting Up a USB Wireless Sensor Adapter with iMonnit Online

The Monnit USB Wireless Sensor Adapter is the current version of the Monnit USB Gateway. The Wireless Sensor Adapter connects to a PC through a USB cable. This gateway communicates wirelessly with sensors and transmits sensor data to iMonnit software through a utility that runs as an application on the host PC.

  • Click the “Start Local Service” button in the utility.
  • Connect the sensor adapter to your PC via USB cable.

Download and install the Monnit Link Gateway Utility

Visit the link above, and run the Monnit Link Gateway Utility installer. The application is supported by Windows Vista, 7, 8, or 10. It is worth noting however, that the version of FTDI driver which is installed by Windows automatically may need to be reviewed.

Launch the Monnit Link Gateway Utility and start the Local Service

A shortcut on the desktop should be created from which you can launch the Monnit Link Gateway Utility.

Start the Local Service

The Local Service is a Windows Service that runs in the background and process gateway data. The service is responsible for receiving data from the gateway on TCP port 3500 and sending data from the Gateway > Monnit Link Gateway Utility to the iMonnit Online Portal over TCP port 3000.

Connect the gateway to the USB port of the PC

Connect the USB cable between the Wireless Sensor Adapter and the PC. If the driver is correctly installed and the sensor is communicating with the PC, the Status in the Monnit Link Gateway Utility should display as Active or Idle. If you see the status as Unknown, there is an issue with the physical connection or the driver. You may want to restart the PC if you do not see an Active/Idle Status.

Check the iMonnit Online Portal for gateway communication

Once the utility is installed and running, the Local Service is running, the driver is installed, the gateway is physically connected, the gateway Status is Active, and the host PC has an Internet connection, the gateway can transmit data to the iMonnit Online portal. To manually initiate a gateway check in, you can click the Send Messages to Server button in the utility. After doing so, you should see a check in from the gateway. If you do not see a check in under the gateway’s History in iMonnit Online, you will want to check your network configuration, confirm the PC has an Internet connection, and that the PC can transmit data to the Internet over Port 3000.

If your gateway does not check in with iMonnit Online

If you do not see data from your gateway in the iMonnit Online portal, check the following:

  • Confirm your gateway shows a Status of Active or Idle in the Monnit Link Gateway Utility.
  • Confirm the host PC has an active Internet connection.
  • Confirm the firewall on the PC allows for outgoing network traffic on outbound TCP port 3000.
  • Confirm the network to which the PC is connected allows for outgoing network traffic on outbound TCP port 3000.

You can use the tool found in the article below to test that the PC and network are able to find the iMonnit server and allow for communication on the appropriate port. If this test is successful, your PC and network are configured to allow for communication with the iMonnit Online portal. Using the Monnit Communication Check Utility
