Count Foot Traffic and Occupancy Smarter

new people counter sensor

The Monnit PoE•X™ People Counter, currently in beta testing, represents an advancement in non-camera-based occupancy sensing. Using advanced radar technology, this smart sensor accurately counts people as they enter and exit buildings or areas—while protecting individual privacy.

From offices, factories, restaurants, malls, and hospitals to stadiums, theaters, airports, and schools, it delivers the data you need to manage traffic flow, prevent overcrowding, and optimize space use.

Install the People Counter in ceilings or walls near entrances, exits, hallways, pathways, or stairways. Then, with real-time insights, you can improve staffing, enhance visitor experiences, and uncover foot traffic patterns that drive smarter operational and marketing decisions. Footfall metrics, occupancy trends, and peak usage data are all within reach—helping you boost efficiency and safety across your facility.

Powered by millimeter-wave radar with multiple antennas, the sensor achieves over 95% accuracy, depending on the spacing between people entering or exiting the monitored area. Even in challenging conditions, such as poor lighting, it detects motion without requiring visual identification.

As part of Monnit’s PoE•X Sensor family, the People Counter connects directly into your building’s Power over Ethernet (PoE) infrastructure—using a single cable for both data and power. This streamlined connectivity supports modern smart building strategies and scalable sensor deployment.

On Its Way: A New Water Detection Disc

Damage from water leaks in commercial and industrial buildings can happen almost anywhere within a plumbing system or where water finds a way in after storms. The costs can add up to billions in insurance claims and restoration.

Monnit believes prevention can be the best insurance. We will soon introduce the new ALTA® Wireless Rechargeable Water Detection Disc to help you know quickly when a pipe, fixture, tank, or boiler leaks or bursts. If water pools or runs under the sensor and its two stainless steel 316 detect posts in as little as 1.6 mm (1/16 in), you’ll get an alert via email, SMS, push notification, or voice call.

Other prominent features of the ALTA Rechargeable Water Detection Disc include:

  • Long-lasting battery life: 8–10 years and rechargeable via a USB-C cable and port.
  • A power button with an LED status indicator.
  • Streamlined design for manufacturing (DFM) housing, hardware, and integrated feet.

The ALTA Water Detection Disc is an ideal addition to the Monnit Water Detect product line, featuring the ALTA Water Rope, Detect, and Detect Plus Sensors.

Firmware Enhancements for Power Over Ethernet (PoE) Sensors

Monnit Engineers recently released firmware feature enhancements for all of our PoE•X™ Sensors. The new upgrades will provide more automated, efficient, redundant, and balanced network connectivity processes.

The enhanced features include:

  1. A more efficient Ethernet Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) connection algorithm.
  2. Standardized parallel Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) connections.

The enhanced DHCP connection enables faster startup and reboot times, enhanced network stability, and greater overall efficiency connecting PoE•X Sensors. The parallel HTTP connections provide a smoother, persistent browser interface. Both firmware enhancements are available for download in iMonnit.

How Sensor Assessments per Heartbeat Works

How often do you want your Monnit Sensors to measure a condition against a threshold between Heartbeats?

You can configure the Assessments per Heartbeat setting in iMonnit, allowing sensors to determine whether they should enter the Aware State or remain there to alert you of a threshold breach. By configuring the Assessments per Heartbeat and Aware State settings in iMonnit, you can:

  • Preserve sensor battery life
  • Process sensor data at the edge
  • Collect the right amount of timely, actionable data for your use case

The Monnit Knowledgebase article, “How Assessments per Heartbeat Works,” details how to configure it. You’ll learn:

  • The benefits of Assessments per Heartbeat and Aware State
  • Examples of the settings and what to expect
  • How to configure the Assessments per Heartbeat setting
  • How to configure the Aware State Threshold setting

Knowing how to configure the sensor settings—Assessments per Heartbeat and Aware State Threshold—is critical to enjoying the benefits of remote monitoring.
