Monnit and AIMNET Turn Up the Heat on Smart Climate Control
When studio temperatures reach 110°F and humidity hits 50%, climate control is more than a comfort issue. It's essential to the hot yoga experience. For YogaSol Hot Yoga and HIIT Pilates Studio in Norwalk, Connecticut, maintaining precise conditions across multiple studios, with classes running 16 hours a day, seven days a week, demanded a smarter approach.
Manually adjusting heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems between classes created extra work for staff and increased operating costs.
YogaSol founder and owner Dan Markowitz and managing partner Jeanne Tang partnered with AIMNET Smart Building Systems, a Monnit partner specializing in building automation, to automate studio climate management without breaking the budget.
A Hot Challenge Calls for a Smart Solution
YogaSol offers yoga and Pilates classes with different temperature and humidity requirements. Studio conditions can range from 90°F to 110°F, with relative humidity reaching 50%. Between classes, staff also needed to reduce heat and humidity for thorough cleaning, then restore the preferred conditions for the next session.
Instructors needed a quick way to bring in fresh air and activate exhaust ventilation if a room got too hot or participants showed signs of heat-related stress. Meanwhile, management needed remote access, reliable climate records, and alerts when conditions strayed outside preset ranges or equipment required attention.
The goal? Let staff focus on people, not constantly adjust the building conditions. They needed remote, scheduled controls.
Connecting Sensors, Schedules, and Climate Control
Working with YogaSol, AIMNET Project Engineer David Dickson and his team designed an integrated Internet of Things (IoT) solution using Monnit ALTA® Wireless Sensors, iMonnit™ remote monitoring software, ALTA Control Units, and Google Calendar.
iMonnit Software and ALTA Gateways to collect sensor data, enable remote monitoring, and connect the system to scheduled operations.
Google Calendar became the scheduling hub. Class times trigger automated climate-control commands, helping studios reach their target conditions before sessions and return to normal settings between classes or when the facility is closed. Timed exhaust cycles support cleaning, while instructors can override ventilation when conditions demand it.
Managers and staff can monitor the system remotely and receive email, text, push notifications, or voice-call alerts when readings fall outside established limits. Climate data logging also supports compliance and helps identify potential equipment malfunctions.
The Results: More Than 60 Hours Saved Every Week
The integrated solution transformed YogaSol's day-to-day operations. Automating class scheduling and climate control eliminated the need for employees to manage routine adjustments manually, saving more than 60 labor hours per week.
The installation cost was about 75% lower than the alternatives AIMNET evaluated, helping the studio achieve a rapid return on investment while staying within budget.
Additional benefits included:
More consistent studio temperatures and humidity.
Faster, simpler ventilation control for instructors.
Remote monitoring and management from a computer or smart device.
Automated climate data logging and alerts.
Reduced administrative workload and improved operational efficiency.
After more than four years of operation, AIMNET and YogaSol remained pleased with the results. Tang emphasized that automation lets the owners manage the studio even when they are not physically present. At the same time, Dickson credited Monnit's products with meeting the project's requirements at a significantly lower installation cost.
A Better Environment, With Less Hands-On Work
YogaSol's success shows how wireless sensing and automation can do more than monitor a building. They can connect environmental data to everyday operations. By combining ALTA Wireless Sensors, iMonnit Software, wireless controls, and calendar-based scheduling, AIMNET helped YogaSol maintain demanding studio conditions while reducing labor and installation costs.
The result is a smarter, more efficient studio, and a powerful example of how Monnit technology helps businesses keep their cool, even when things heat up.
