Sensor Installation

Summary: How to install your Monnit sensors with double-sided tape and screws.

General Wireless Sensor Monitoring

Monnit wireless sensors feature mounting flanges and can be attached to most surfaces using the included mounting screws or double-sided tape.

In order for your wireless sensors to work optimally, you should orient all antennas for your sensors and gateways in the same direction (typically vertical). Also, sensors must be at least 3ft. away from other sensors and the wireless gateway in order to function properly.

Correct Antenna Orientation: Antennas should all be pointing vertically. Correct Antenna Placement

Incorrect Antenna Orientation: Antennas should not be pointing vertically and horizontally. Incorrect Antenna Placement

Incorrect Sensor Positioning: Sensors should not be mounted high with wireless gateways mounted low. Also, avoid positioning sensors or gateways on the floor. Another Incorrect Placement

Sensor and Gateway Distance: The strength of the signal between a sensor and a gateway can vary depending on the antenna equipped. Those sensors which can transmit long distances can sometimes have more difficulty up close. The nearer the sensor to the gateway depending on the strength of the signal, the more garbled the signal can be. The analogy we like to use is if you have a bullhorn and you are right next to someone, they will hear you but they may not be able to understand what you are saying because the signal is too loud. If you move away from the person, they will both be able to hear you and be able to understand what you are saying. The following are suggested distances the sensors should be from the gateway and each other.

Coin Cell Sensors should always be placed a minimum of 3 to 5 feet from the gateway and other sensors. AA Sensors need 5 to 7 feet between them and the gateways for effective close transmission. Industrial sensors need to be at least 7 to 10 feet from the gateway and from each other. The Control Unit with its High Gain antenna should also be a minimum of 7 to 10 feet from the Gateway and any sensors or other control units.

This distance is particularly important during setup when the sensors are trying to connect initially with the gateway as they are actively scanning to try to make contact with the gateway the moment the battery is inserted or the sensor turned on.

Wireless Temperature Sensors

Monnit wireless temperature sensors monitor the ambient temperature around the sensor and can be mounted using the general mounting procedure.

Wireless Humidity Sensors

Monnit wireless humidity sensors monitor the ambient temperature and relative humidity around the sensor and can be mounted using the general mounting procedure.

Wireless Open/Closed Sensors

Monnit wireless open/closed sensors detect when a door or window is open or closed. For the sensor to work properly, the magnet will need to be within 1 inch of the magnet sensor. The magnet and sensor have a double-sided sticky tape which allows them to be affixed to the door and the door frame. The magnet should be attached to the door, and the sensor should be attached to the door frame. Ensure that the magnet and sensor are mounted where they will not interfere with the door motion when opening and closing.

Wireless Water Detect Sensors

Monnit wireless water detection sensors audit the presence of water at the end of the water probe. The end of the water detection probe should be attached where it should detect water. This can be a wall, the side of a container, or even a pipe in a sump pit.

Wireless Motion Sensors

Monnit wireless motion sensors use passive infrared technology to detect human movement in front of the sensor. The sensor has a detection range of approximately 16 feet (5 meters) with a detection field of 80° from the straight center with a standard version and 110° for the wide-angle version.
