Monnit Engineers are set to roll out firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updates for various Monnit Sensors over the next few months.

FOTA updates for Monnit Sensors provide remote, one-click scalability that can optimize performance, add new features, improve battery performance, refine connectivity, and deliver critical fixes. Managed seamlessly through iMonnit®, these updates also eliminate manual maintenance and keep devices secure.

Here’s a preview of what’s coming your way through iMonnit® Software as a Service (SaaS) to the following ALTA® Wireless Sensors and ALTA and ALTA XL® Gateways:

ALTA Sensors & Meters

All ALTA radios will receive an enhancement to improve overall radio connectivity stability in sub −10°C (14°F) environments. As the reference frequency changes, this firmware enhancement will better account for those changes and quickly stabilize the network connection.

We’ll continue to tune the radios in our factory before they go out, but our enhancement is a further step in the field for greater ALTA Wireless Sensor Network stability.

ALTA Differential Air Pressure Sensors

We recently released a maintenance update for ALTA Differential Air Pressure Sensors. The enhancement includes the ability to apply an offset calibration to the sensor.

The updated firmware, coupled with the updated iMonnit Software, allows you to compensate for drift that may occur over time due to natural aging, temperature, physical stress, or other environmental factors.

ALTA AC Current Meters

Following another customer’s request, we’re updating the data set for our single-phase ALTA Wireless AC Current Meters. We’ve added an instantaneous reading. This is in addition to the Minimum, Maximum, and Average AMP-root mean square (RMS) data set and the accumulated Amp-hours read during Heartbeats or at set reporting intervals.

ALTA Water Rope Sensors

Our ALTA Water Rope Sensors will receive an update to better handle on-the-ground conditions, where humidity changes and rope contamination can affect their water-detection trigger points. We’ve implemented a more dynamic algorithm that better ignores environmental factors that could cause unexpected readings.

ALTA & ALTA XL IoT Cellular Gateways

We also have a new ALTA and ALTA XL IoT Gateway firmware release ready. The key change in this release is the Ethernet interface process for protocols. DHCP was noted to be working too fast. It was cutting off early and not accounting for some routers’ latencies.

When you’d request a DHCP lease and receive an IP address for that router, it might take up to a minute to get the lease back. The IoT Gateways gave up after 30 seconds. To improve the ALTA and ALTA XL IoT Gateways’ Ethernet capabilities, we’ve expanded the DHCP timing and enabled them to work better with routers, thanks to direct feedback from customers.

How to Calibrate Wireless Temperature Sensors

ALTA wireless temperature sensor calibration for accurate readings

Calibrated sensors are the precursor to precise, reproducible measurement. Our calibration processes are essential to product quality, safety, and compliance.

Customers in many industries, including food services, pharmaceutical manufacturing, logistics, pest control, facility management, health care, and hospitality, depend on our temperature sensors for exact readings.

To ensure reliable performance and uptime, your ALTA Wireless Temperature Sensors arrive accurately calibrated against a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)-certified temperature sensor at ±1% (±1°C or 1.8°F). With your additional calibration, you can achieve a greater accuracy of ±0.25°C (±0.45°F). We can also provide a one-time or recurring NIST-traceable calibration certification.

If you believe an ALTA Temperature Sensor reading is inaccurate, you can recalibrate it using iMonnit. We have a Monnit Knowledgebase video to walk you through the following calibration steps:

  1. Fill an ice bath.
  2. Insert the lead into the bath.
  3. Go to iMonnit and select your sensor.
  4. Enter the temperature of the ice bath.
  5. Click the Calibrate button.
  6. Review the calibration tips.
